History

The history of Carate Brianza dates back to the Stone Age, as shown by a discovery made of carved rocks that are now preserved in the Archeological Museum of Milan.

The Lombard Queen Theodolinda built in this town a tower, which later was turned into the bell tower for the main church. After the 10th century, a wall was built around the town to protect it from barbarian attacks. The Middle Age was characterized by the spreading of the Christianity, so five churches were built and also a hospital.

During the 19th century a famous jurist and philosopher, Gian Domenico Romagnosi, lived in Carate.

Main sights

Sights include the "Villa Cusani Confalonieri", originally built as a castle and that became municipal property when the family died out. Now you can find there a park and the public library.

The imposing church of Sant' Ambrogio e Simpliciano, built in the 19th century, is situated in the centre of the town, near the statue of Sant'Anatalone, which has been restored recently.

Carate Brianza is divided into the following frazioni (roughly equivalent to the anglocentric ward): Agliate, and Costa Lambro .

The most important monument is the Basilica of San Pietro and San Paolo in Agliate, the church is a masterpiece of the Romanesque style.
